Understanding Virtual Avatars

Unlike games where your character is a single unit, virtual world avatars are built from modular parts created by different designers. This gives you incredible freedom! Think of it like building with LEGO - each piece works together to create your unique look.

The Modern Standard: Today's avatars use Mesh Bodies and Mesh Heads for ultra-realistic appearance. These are high-quality 3D models that replace the basic "system" avatar you started with.

The 6 Essential Avatar Components

Master these building blocks to create your perfect look

1. The Shape

Your avatar's underlying body proportions and dimensions.

What it does: Controls height, weight, body proportions, facial structure
How to edit: Right-click yourself → Appearance → Edit Shape
Pro tip: Save multiple shapes for different outfits or moods!

2. The Mesh Body

A high-quality 3D model that replaces your basic system body.

Popular brands: Maitreya, Legacy, Belleza, Signature, eBody
Why upgrade: Better shape, realistic details, smooth appearance
Cost: Usually 2,500-5,000 Gali (in-world currency)
Most Popular: Maitreya Lara is the most common mesh body, which means most clothing is designed to fit it perfectly!

3. The Mesh Head

A detailed 3D head with realistic features and expressions.

Popular brands: Lelutka, Catwa, Genesis, LAQ
Features: Blink animations, facial expressions, better textures
HUD control: Comes with a HUD to change expressions and animations
Compatibility: Make sure your head's neck matches your body's neck for a seamless look!

4. The Skin

The texture that gives your body and head their color and detail.

Two types: Applier skins (older) vs. BOM skins (modern standard)
BOM (Bakes on Mesh): Works universally on all mesh bodies
What to match: Get skins designed for your head brand
Always Choose BOM: BOM skins are easier to use and work on any mesh body without special appliers!

5. Animation Overrider (AO)

Changes how your avatar stands, walks, and moves.

What it does: Replaces default robot-like movements
Essential item: Makes your avatar look natural and alive
How to use: Wear it like any attachment, activate from HUD
Free AOs Available: Many stores offer free or low-cost AOs. Your mesh body may include one!

6. Clothing & Accessories

Outfits, jewelry, hair, and accessories to complete your style.

Clothing types: System layers, mesh clothing, rigged mesh
Important: Check if clothing fits your specific mesh body
Shopping tip: Look for "Maitreya compatible" or your body brand
Try Demos First: Most stores offer free demos so you can test fit before buying!

Step-by-Step: Your First Complete Makeover

Follow this order for best results

Get a Mesh Body

This is your foundation. Everything else builds on this.

Where to Get One:
  • Visit the Alife Virtual marketplace
  • Search for "mesh body" or specific brands
  • Many creators offer free or low-cost starter bodies
  • Popular choice: Look for Maitreya Lara
How to Apply:
  1. Right-click your inventory item
  2. Select "Wear" or "Add"
  3. Your body will appear (may take a moment)
  4. Use the included HUD to adjust alpha (hide parts)

Get a Mesh Head

For realistic facial features and expressions.

Choosing Your Head:
  • Try demos first - heads are personal!
  • Check neck compatibility with your body
  • Consider animation features (blink, smile, etc.)
  • Popular brands: Lelutka, Catwa, Genesis
Application Tips:
  1. Wear the head like your body
  2. Use the head's HUD to adjust size
  3. Align the neck with your body's neck
  4. Hide your system head (Edit Appearance → Alpha → Head)

Apply Your Skin

This gives your body and head their color and texture.

BOM vs. Appliers - What's the Difference?
BOM (Recommended):
  • Universal - works on all mesh bodies
  • Easier to use (just wear it)
  • Modern standard
  • Better layer control
Appliers (Older Method):
  • Body-specific (need different versions)
  • Use HUD to apply
  • Being phased out
  • Only use if no BOM version available
How to Apply BOM Skin: Simply wear it from your inventory. Make sure your mesh body has "BOM" enabled in its HUD. Most modern bodies have this on by default.

Fine-Tune Your Shape

Now adjust your body proportions to match your vision.

Accessing the Editor:
  1. Right-click your avatar
  2. Select "Appearance"
  3. Click "Edit Shape" tab
  4. Adjust sliders to your preference
Key Areas to Adjust:
  • Height: Overall avatar height
  • Body: Proportions, muscle, curves
  • Head: Face shape, features
  • Save Often: Don't lose your work!
Important: Some sliders may not affect mesh bodies/heads. Focus on sliders that control overall proportions and positioning.

Add Hair, Eyes & Makeup

The finishing touches that bring your look together.

Hair

Wear like any attachment. Rigged hair moves with your head. Try different styles to find your look!

Eyes

Modern mesh heads use HUD-based eyes. Click your head HUD to change eye color and iris details.

Makeup

Applied via BOM layers or head HUD. Layer multiple items for custom looks (lipstick, eyeshadow, etc.)

Wear Your AO & Get Dressed

Final steps to complete your transformation!

Animation Overrider:

Wear your AO and activate it via its HUD. You should immediately see your standing and walking animations become more natural and fluid.

Clothing:

Now add your outfit! Remember to check clothing is compatible with your mesh body. Use your body's HUD to hide (alpha) any parts that clip through clothing.

Pro Tips for Advanced Customization

Layering Like a Pro

BOM allows you to layer multiple clothing items and tattoos. Think of it like Photoshop layers - you can stack them to create unique looks!

  • Tattoo layers can be permanent markings or temporary designs
  • Clothing layers stack on top of skin
  • Use alpha layers to hide specific body parts

Save Your Outfits

Don't rebuild your look every time! Save complete outfits for quick changes.

  1. Wear your complete outfit
  2. Right-click yourself → Appearance
  3. Click "Make Outfit" at bottom
  4. Name it and save!

Organize Your Inventory

A well-organized inventory makes styling faster and more enjoyable.

  • Create folders: Bodies, Heads, Skins, Hair, Clothing, Shoes
  • Further subdivide: Formal, Casual, Fantasy, etc.
  • Keep demos in a separate "Demos" folder
  • Delete items you won't use

Take Photos to Compare

When trying demos or making changes, take snapshots to compare later.

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+S for snapshot
  • Save to disk to compare side-by-side
  • Helpful when choosing between similar items
  • Great for tracking your avatar's evolution!
