Step-by-Step Inventory Management
Ready to tame the inventory beast? Let's go through the process step-by-step. Log into Alife Virtual World using your Firestorm viewer to follow along.
Step 1: Opening and Understanding the Inventory Window
First, you need to open your inventory. You can do this in a few ways:
- Click the suitcase icon on the bottom toolbar of your screen.
- Use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + I.
- Go to the top menu and select Avatar > Inventory.
The Inventory window will open. It might look complex at first, but it's divided into a few key areas:
- Top Bar: This contains the search bar, filters, and menu options (File, Create, Sort).
- Left Pane: This is your folder tree. It has two main tabs: My Inventory and Library.
My Inventory: This is your personal space where all your items are stored. This is what we will be organizing.Library: This contains a default set of items provided by the viewer/grid (like basic avatars and building tools). You cannot modify this folder.
- Bottom Bar: Here you'll find buttons for creating new items, a gear icon for settings, and the trash can icon.
Step 2: Creating a Logical Folder Structure
The foundation of good inventory management is a clean folder structure. A new avatar starts with default folders like Animations, Clothing, and Objects. We're going to create our own system.
- In the Inventory window, right-click on the top-level
My Inventoryfolder. - Select New Folder from the context menu.
- A new folder will appear with the name "New Folder". It will already be highlighted, so you can immediately type a new name. Let's call it
[OUTFITS]and press Enter. The brackets make it stand out and sort to the top. - Create a few more top-level folders for common item types. A good starting structure might be:
[AVATAR PARTS](for mesh bodies, heads, skins, shapes)[CLOTHING][HAIR][ACCESSORIES](for jewelry, glasses, bags)[HOME & GARDEN](for furniture and decor)[TOOLS & HUDS]_TO SORT(Use an underscore to push this folder to the bottom. This is where you'll put new purchases before organizing them.)
- You can create sub-folders inside these. For example, inside
[CLOTHING], you could right-click it and create new folders forShirts,Pants, andDresses.
Step 3: Moving and Sorting Items
Now that you have folders, it's time to move your items into them.
- Find an item you want to move. For example, a shirt might be in your main
Clothingfolder or yourObjectsfolder. - Click and drag the item from its current location and drop it onto the desired folder (e.g., your new
[CLOTHING] > Shirtsfolder). - You can select multiple items at once by holding down Ctrl while clicking each item, or select a range of items by clicking the first one, holding down Shift, and clicking the last one.
- Drag the entire selection to the new folder.
(no copy) permissions. When you drag and drop a (no copy) item, it moves it. If you drag it onto your avatar to wear it, a link is created in your inventory, but the original object moves to your avatar. Always organize (no copy) items carefully.
Step 4: Using the Search and Filter Functions
Can't find something? Firestorm's search is incredibly powerful. The search bar is at the top of the Inventory window.
- Basic Search: Simply type a keyword into the search bar (e.g., "jeans") and press Enter. Firestorm will show all items and folders with that word in the name.
- Using Filters: To the left of the search bar is a dropdown menu. This is for filtering.
- All: Searches everything.
- Recent: This is your best friend! It shows all items you've received, worn, or rezzed recently, sorted by most recent first. If you just bought something, it will be at the top of this list.
- Worn: Shows only the items you are currently wearing. This is perfect for finding a specific HUD or accessory you have on.
- Advanced Search: Click the gear icon next to the search bar to open more filters. You can search by:
- Name, Description, Creator, or UUID.
- Item Type (e.g., show only Gestures or Notecards).
- Permissions (e.g., show only
(no copy)items). - Date (e.g., items acquired in the last 7 days).
Step 5: Saving and Managing Outfits
Tired of searching for every piece of your favorite look? Save it as an outfit!
- Get your avatar dressed exactly how you want the outfit to be saved.
- Go to your
[OUTFITS]folder that you created earlier. Right-click on it and create a New Folder for this specific outfit (e.g., "Casual Friday Look"). - Right-click the new outfit folder (e.g., "Casual Friday Look") and select Save Outfit.
- A dialog box will appear. Give the outfit a name. It will show a list of everything you are currently wearing. You can uncheck items you don't want to be part of the outfit (like your AO or mesh body, which you might wear with every outfit).
- Click Save.
- Firestorm will create links to all the outfit items and place them in a new sub-folder with the outfit's name. Now, to wear this entire outfit, you just need to right-click that folder and choose Replace Current Outfit or Add to Current Outfit.
Step 6: Deleting Items and Using the Trash
A clean inventory also means getting rid of things you don't need.
- Select the item or folder you want to delete.
- Press the Delete key on your keyboard, or right-click the item and select Delete.
- The item is moved to the
Trashsystem folder at the bottom of your inventory. It's not gone forever yet! - To restore an item, open the
Trashfolder, right-click the item, and select Undelete. - To permanently delete items, right-click the
Trashfolder and select Empty Trash. A confirmation window will appear.
(no copy) items in there.
Common Issues & Troubleshooting
Even with the best organization, things can sometimes go wrong. Here's how to fix common problems.
-
Issue: My inventory is stuck on "Fetching..." or won't load.
This is usually a cache or connection issue.
Solution: First, try teleporting to a quiet region (like your free Alife island) and wait a few minutes. If that doesn't work, it's time to clear your cache. Go to Avatar > Preferences > Network & Files. Click the Clear Cache button. You will be prompted to restart the viewer. This often solves many inventory-related problems. -
Issue: I just received an item, but I can't find it!
This is very common.
Solution: Open your Inventory (Ctrl+I) and click the Recent tab/filter. Your new item will almost always be at the very top of this list. From here, you can drag it into your_TO SORTfolder for later organization. -
Issue: I can't copy an item.
The item is likely marked as "(no copy)".
Solution: Right-click the item and select Properties. The permissions will be listed. If "Copy" has an 'x' next to it, you cannot duplicate it. Be extra careful not to delete these items. -
Issue: My inventory count is very high and it loads slowly.
A large inventory (over 50,000 items) can impact performance.
Solution: Regularly go through your folders and delete old demos, unwanted gifts, and items you'll never use. Emptying your trash also helps. A lean inventory is a fast inventory.
Tips & Best Practices
Take your firestorm viewer inventory management to the next level with these pro tips.
- Use Prefixes for Sorting: Use symbols like
!,#,[ ], or_at the beginning of folder names to control their sort order. Symbols sort first, then numbers, then letters, with the underscore sorting last. - The "Received Items" Window: If you prefer not to have new items go directly into your inventory, you can change a setting. Go to Avatar > Preferences > Privacy > General and uncheck "Accept new items directly into my inventory". Now, when you get an item, a small window will pop up, allowing you to accept or discard it on the spot.
- Link, Don't Copy: When organizing, if you have an item that could belong in two folders (e.g., a hat that's part of a specific outfit), place the original item in one folder and create a link to it in the second. To do this, right-click the item, select Copy, then right-click the destination folder and select Paste as Link. This keeps your item count down.
- Backup Your Outfits: While you can't "back up" items themselves, you can keep a notecard with details of your most important outfits, especially those with
(no copy)parts. In the notecard, list the name and creator of each piece. This way, if you accidentally delete something, you know what to look for again. - Clean As You Go: The best way to stay organized is to sort new items immediately. When you receive or unbox something, move it from your
ObjectsorRecenttab directly into your_TO SORTfolder. Once a week, spend 15 minutes going through that folder and filing everything away properly.
