CLASS 34: Parcel Access and Security Settings

Parcel Access and Security Settings — Alife Virtual School

Parcel Access and Security Settings — Free class in Alife Virtual School

Welcome, Alife citizen, to your masterclass on digital sovereignty. You've stepped into a new metaverse, a vast and free 3D world, and claimed your own private island—a sprawling 65,536 sqm canvas, completely free. But with great property comes the need for great security. This class, Parcel Access and Security Settings, is your comprehensive guide to transforming your land from an open field into a fortified sanctuary, an exclusive club, or a welcoming commercial hub. Mastering these tools is the first and most critical step in controlling your virtual experience, ensuring your corner of the Alife Virtual universe operates exactly as you intend. Forget the limitations of other platforms; here, you are the master of your domain, and we will teach you how to wield that power effectively.

The Alife Advantage: Unprecedented Control at Zero Cost

In the broader metaverse landscape, control costs money. On platforms like Second Life, securing a full region of comparable size to your free Alife island can cost upwards of $300 per month in tier fees. This creates a significant financial barrier, limiting true creative freedom to those who can afford it. Alife Virtual demolishes this barrier. We believe that your creativity shouldn't be paywalled. Our 100% free virtual economy extends to the very land you stand on.

Let's compare the real cost of land ownership and control:

Feature Alife Virtual Other Platforms (e.g., Second Life)
65,536 sqm Private Island FREE, forever. ~$300 USD per month + setup fees.
Parcel Access & Ban Lists FREE. Full control included. Included, but only if you pay the monthly land fees.
Unlimited Object Uploads FREE. Upload all the mesh, textures, and scripts you need for your builds. L$10 (~$0.04 USD) per texture, mesh, sound, or animation upload. This adds up quickly!
Group-Owned Land FREE. Create unlimited groups and deed land to them at no cost. Requires a paid group and monthly land fees.

This fundamental difference makes Alife Virtual a true creator's paradise and a superior Second Life alternative. The skills you learn in this class empower you to manage a digital asset that would be a significant monthly expense elsewhere—all for free.

What You Will Learn

Upon completing this class, you will be able to:

Prerequisites

Step-by-Step Tutorial: Securing Your Digital Domain

Your free private island is a blank slate. Let's build its walls, gates, and security systems. The primary tool for this is the About Land window. To access it, stand on your land, right-click the ground, and select About Land from the pie menu.

This window contains several tabs. We will focus on the most critical ones for security: Access and Options.

Part 1: The 'Access' Tab – Your Primary Control Panel

Click on the Access tab. This is where you define who can and cannot set foot on your property. Let's break down each setting with precision.

(Image: The 'Access' tab is your command center for land permissions.)

1. Setting Overall Access Level

At the top, you'll see a checkbox for Allow Public Access. This is your master switch.

For now, let's assume you want to create a private space, so uncheck Allow Public Access.

2. Creating an "Allowed" List (Specific Individuals)

With public access off, no one can enter. To grant access to specific friends or collaborators, you use the "Allowed" list.

  1. Under the Allowed Residents section, click the Add... button.
  2. A "Choose Resident" window will appear. Start typing the name of the avatar you wish to grant access to.
  3. Select the correct name from the list and click OK.
  4. The avatar's name will now appear in the Allowed Residents list. They can now enter your land at any time, even when public access is disabled.
  5. To remove someone, simply select their name in the list and click Remove.

Pro Tip: The Power of Alts
Creating a free alternate avatar (an "alt") is a fantastic way to test your security settings. Keep your alt off the access list and try to teleport to your main parcel. You should be denied. Then, add your alt to the list and try again. This provides instant confirmation that your settings are working correctly.

3. Implementing Group-Only Access

Managing a long list of individuals can be tedious. For communities, businesses, or large families, group access is far more efficient. This powerful feature allows any member of a designated group to enter your land.

  1. First, you need a group. If you don't have one, go to the top menu: Communicate > My Groups. Click the Create New Group... button. Give it a name (e.g., "The Sanctuary Club"), check Open Enrollment if you want people to join freely, and click Create Group. Make sure to activate the group tag by selecting it and clicking Activate.
  2. Deed the Land to the Group: Back in the About Land window, go to the General tab. Next to the Group: label, click the Set... button. Select your newly created group and click OK. You will see a checkbox appear: Deed to group. Check this box. A confirmation will appear; agree to it. The land is now owned by the group.
  3. Configure Group Access: Now, go back to the Access tab. You will see that the access options have changed slightly. Uncheck Allow Public Access. Now, only members of the group that owns the land can enter. You can still add specific individuals to the Allowed Residents list who are not in the group.

This is the standard method for running clubs, roleplaying communities, and collaborative building projects in this free 3D world.

4. The Ban List: Your Digital Bouncer

The ban list is your most powerful tool for removing disruptive individuals permanently.

Common Mistake: Accidental Self-Ban
Be extremely careful when typing names into the ban list. It is possible to ban yourself or the owner of the land. While you can usually fix this by logging in with an alt that has permissions or asking a friend with moderation powers to remove you, it's a frustrating and avoidable error. Double-check every name before clicking OK.

Part 2: The 'Options' Tab – Fine-Tuning Your Security

The Options tab contains crucial settings that prevent common forms of griefing and control how people interact with your land.

1. Preventing Push Griefing

Under the Avatar Physics section, you will see a checkbox for Allow non-owner push. "Push" is a force an avatar can exert on other avatars or objects. Griefers often use scripted attachments to push people around, disrupting events or trapping them in corners.

For 99% of use cases, you should UNCHECK this box. Disabling non-owner push is one of the single most effective anti-griefing measures you can take. It ensures that only the land owner can enable push scripts, giving you full control.

2. Controlling Object Entry and Building

Under the Object Permissions section, you'll find several critical dropdown menus:

For a private home, set both Build and Object Entry to Group (if deeded) or `None`. For a sandbox or collaborative workspace, set them to Group.

Part 3: Introduction to Security Orbs

While the built-in land tools are powerful, they are static. A security orb is an in-world object that runs a script (using LSL scripting) to provide active, dynamic security.

Why use an orb?

Setting Up a Basic Alife SecureOrb

Your Alife Virtual starter pack includes a free, basic security system called the "Alife SecureOrb v1.0".

  1. Find the Alife SecureOrb v1.0 in your inventory and rez it on your land.
  2. Click the orb to bring up its menu.
  3. Activate: Click the [Activate] button. The orb is now active.
  4. Set Mode: You can typically choose between Allow Group (only lets in members of the land's group), Allow List (uses its own internal list), or Ban List (ejects anyone on its ban list).
  5. Configure: Use the menu to add names to its internal allow or ban lists.

A security orb works in tandem with your land settings. It's best practice to set your parcel to private (unchecked Allow Public Access) and then use the orb for more nuanced, automated control within that private space.

Advanced Applications

Once you've mastered the basics, you can create incredibly sophisticated environments.

Practice Exercise: The Fortress of Solitude

Let's put your new knowledge into practice.

  1. Create a Group: Create a new group called "[Your Name]'s Fortress".
  2. Deed the Land: Set your main parcel to your new group and deed the land to it.
  3. Secure the Parcel: In the Access tab, uncheck Allow Public Access. In the Options tab, uncheck Allow non-owner push and set both Build and Object Entry to Group.
  4. Create a Public Entryway: Use the land tools (select a small 32x32m area at the edge of your island) and subdivide it. Set this new, small parcel to Allow Public Access. This is now your "Welcome Mat".
  5. Test It: Invite a friend (or use your alt). Have them join your new group. They should be able to enter the main parcel. Then, have them leave the group. They should now be blocked from the main parcel but still able to access the small public entryway.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What's the difference between the "Allowed" list and Group Access?
The "Allowed" list is for granting access to specific, named individuals one by one. Group Access grants access to anyone who is a member of the designated group. Group access is far more scalable and easier to manage for communities or if you have many friends you want to allow in.
2. If I ban someone from my parcel, are they banned from the entire Alife Virtual grid?
No. Banning is specific to the parcel(s) you own and control. The user is only blocked from entering your land. They are still free to explore the rest of the Alife Virtual metaverse. Grid-wide bans are handled by Alife support for serious violations of the Terms of Service.
3. Can I unban someone?
Yes. Simply go to the About Land > Access tab, select the person's name in the Banned Residents list, and click the Remove button. They will immediately be able to enter your land again (provided they meet the other access requirements).
4. Why do I need a security orb if the land tools already have ban lists?
A security orb offers automation and nuance. It can provide warnings before ejection, manage temporary bans, keep visitor logs, and cover specific zones within a larger parcel. It's an active system, whereas the land tools are a passive wall. Using both provides the most robust security.
5. My friend is in my group but can't rez objects on my land. What's wrong?
This is a common issue. Check the About Land > Options tab. Ensure that Build and/or Object Entry are set to Group. If they are set to None or a different setting, your friend will be unable to bring objects from their inventory onto your land, even if they are in the correct group.
