Alife Virtual School - Class 8: Firestorm Autopilot and Navigation

Firestorm Autopilot and Navigation — Alife Virtual School

Firestorm Autopilot and Navigation — Free class in Alife Virtual School

Welcome, student, to your next step in mastering the virtual world! Have you ever rezzed into a breathtaking, sprawling sim in Alife Virtual and felt a little… lost? You see a fascinating castle on a distant hill or a lively beach party across the bay, but the thought of manually walking or flying all that way feels tedious. What if you could just point to a spot and have your avatar navigate there automatically, leaving you free to enjoy the scenery?

That’s exactly what this class is about. Mastering navigation is the key to unlocking the true potential for exploration in a vast universe like Alife Virtual. It transforms you from a visitor into a confident explorer. This skill is essential for everything from attending events and shopping to simply exploring the incredible worlds built by our community of over 1,148,000 members. And once you've learned these techniques, you can apply them immediately on your very own FREE private island (a full 65,536 sqm region) that you get just for joining Alife Virtual!

In this comprehensive tutorial, we'll demystify the powerful navigation tools built right into the Firestorm Viewer. You’ll learn to move with purpose and precision, saving time and making your in-world experience smoother and more enjoyable.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this class, you will be able to:

Prerequisites

Before we begin, please make sure you have the following:

Part 1: Mastering Double-Click Navigation

Let's start with the simplest and most direct form of automated movement: the double-click. This feature allows you to point at a piece of land and have your avatar either walk to it or, if you prefer, teleport there instantly.

Step 1: Enabling the Feature

First, you need to make sure this option is turned on in your Firestorm preferences.

  1. Open the Preferences window by going to the top menu and selecting Avatar > Preferences, or by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + P.
  2. In the Preferences window, click on the Move & View tab on the left.
  3. Look for the section titled "Movement". You will see a checkbox labeled "Double-click on land to:". Make sure this box is checked.
  4. Next to the checkbox is a dropdown menu. You have two choices:
    • Walk to: When you double-click, your avatar will turn and walk to that specific spot. This is the recommended setting for most situations.
    • Teleport to: When you double-click, your avatar will instantly teleport to that spot. This is faster but can only be used for short distances within your line of sight and draw distance. It can also sometimes get you stuck if you teleport into an object.
  5. Select "Walk to" for now. Click Apply and then OK to save your settings.

[Screenshot Description: The Firestorm Preferences window is open to the 'Move & View' tab. A red box highlights the 'Double-click on land to:' checkbox and the associated dropdown menu set to 'Walk to'.]

Step 2: Putting it to the Test

Find a relatively open area. Now, move your camera so you can see a patch of ground about 20-30 meters in front of you. Double-click your left mouse button on that patch of ground.

You should see your avatar turn and begin walking directly to the spot you clicked! To stop at any time, just press one of the arrow keys or Esc. It's that simple. This is incredibly useful for precise, short-range movements, like walking to a chair, approaching another avatar, or navigating through a crowded store.

Tip: Double-click walking is the perfect way to get around your personal building space. On the free 10,000 prim island you get with Alife Virtual, you can quickly move from one project to another with just a couple of clicks.

Part 2: The Power of Firestorm Autopilot

For longer journeys across a sim, double-clicking isn't practical. That's where the World Map and Autopilot come in. Autopilot allows you to set a destination anywhere on the current sim's map and have your avatar travel there automatically, whether by walking or flying.

Step 1: Opening the World Map

You can access the World Map in two ways:

[Screenshot Description: The Firestorm viewer's bottom toolbar, with a red arrow pointing to the 'World Map' icon.]

The map will open, showing you a top-down view of the entire sim you are currently in. You will be represented by a green arrow, showing your position and the direction you are facing.

Step 2: Setting a Destination

Look around the map. You can click and drag to pan the view, and use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out. Find a location you'd like to travel to—perhaps a distant beach, a building on the other side of the sim, or just an interesting-looking patch of terrain.

Once you've chosen your destination, move your mouse cursor over that exact spot on the map and right-click. A context menu will appear with several options.

Step 3: Activating Autopilot

From the right-click menu on the map, select Autopilot.

Two things will happen immediately:

  1. A red, pulsating beacon will appear on the map at your destination.
  2. A red line will be drawn on the map from your current position to the destination beacon.

Close the map window. You will now see that same red beacon floating in-world at your destination, and your avatar will automatically start moving towards it. Firestorm will intelligently decide whether to walk or fly based on the terrain and any obstacles.

Step 4: Stopping and Controlling Autopilot

You are not locked into the journey. You can stop the Autopilot at any time by simply taking manual control of your avatar. Press any of the movement keys (W, A, S, D or the arrow keys) or hit Esc. The red beacon will disappear, and you will have full control again.

Part 3: Understanding Pathfinding

You might wonder, "How does my avatar know how to get around a tree or a house when I use Autopilot?" The answer is a system called Pathfinding.

Pathfinding is the underlying intelligence that calculates the most efficient route from point A to point B while avoiding obstacles. For this to work, the world's creators must prepare the environment by creating a "navmesh" (navigation mesh). This process essentially tells the system which surfaces are walkable and what objects are solid obstacles.

Many regions in Alife Virtual, including your free private island, are already set up for basic pathfinding. This means Autopilot and other scripted movements are much smarter and more reliable.

Visualizing the Path

If you're curious to see how pathfinding works, you can make the calculated path visible!

  1. Go to the top menu: World > Pathfinding > Show Path.
  2. Now, set an Autopilot destination.
  3. You will see a colored line or series of markers on the ground in front of your avatar, showing the exact route the pathfinding system has calculated. It's a great way to see the "brain" behind the movement.

[Screenshot Description: An avatar walking along a path. A glowing blue line is rendered on the ground in front of them, bending around a large rock, illustrating the calculated pathfinding route.]

A Note for Builders: Learning to create your own pathfinding data for your builds is a more advanced skill. It involves linking your objects and "baking" the navmesh. This allows you to create things like non-player characters (NPCs) that can walk around your property intelligently. You can learn all about this in our free scripting classes, as Alife Virtual has full LSL scripting support, identical to Second Life!

Part 4: Decoupling Your Camera for Exploration

This is the technique that ties everything together and turns you into a true power-explorer. By default, your camera is locked behind your avatar. When you walk, the camera follows. But what if you want to look at something to your left while your avatar continues walking forward?

The Magic of the Alt Key

The Alt key is your best friend for exploration. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Press and hold the Alt.
  2. While holding it, click and drag your left mouse button. You will see that your camera now orbits around a focal point (by default, your avatar) without moving your avatar at all.
  3. While still holding Alt, use your mouse wheel to zoom the camera in and out smoothly.
  4. You can even hold Alt + Ctrl and drag to pan the camera side-to-side and up-and-down.

Combining with Autopilot for Ultimate Freedom

Now, let's combine this with Autopilot. This is the pro move.

  1. Set an Autopilot destination across the sim as you learned in Part 2.
  2. Your avatar will begin its journey automatically.
  3. Now, press and hold the Alt and use your mouse to look around freely!

Your avatar continues on its calculated path, while your camera is completely under your control. You can zoom in on interesting architecture, admire the scenery, inspect player-made creations built with free mesh and texture uploads, or even read signs—all without stopping your forward progress. This is, without a doubt, the most efficient way to travel and sightsee simultaneously.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Mistake 1: My avatar gets stuck or stops for no reason during Autopilot.
Reason: This usually happens when the path is blocked by an object that isn't part of the pathfinding data (like a temporary object, a vehicle, or another avatar) or if the pathfinding data for the area is incomplete.
Solution: Stop the Autopilot (Esc), manually walk your avatar around the obstacle, and then re-engage Autopilot from the World Map. The system will calculate a new path from your new position.
Mistake 2: Double-clicking on the ground does nothing.
Reason: There are two common causes. Either the feature is not enabled in your Preferences (see Part 1), or you are trying to click on a surface that isn't considered "walkable," such as deep water, a phantom object, or land with "no access" permissions.
Solution: First, double-check your settings in Avatar > Preferences > Move & View. If it's enabled, try clicking on a different, more solid-looking piece of ground nearby.
Mistake 3: I used "Double-click to Teleport" and now I'm stuck inside a wall!
Reason: This is the primary risk of using the teleport option. It doesn't check for obstacles and will place you exactly where you click, even if it's inside a solid object.
Solution: Try to walk out. If that fails, open your World Map (Ctrl+M), find a clear, open area, right-click, and choose "Teleport." As a last resort, use the top menu World > Teleport Home to go back to your set home position.

Advanced Tips and Tricks

Practice Exercise: The Alife Virtual School Treasure Hunt

Time to put your new skills to the test! We've set up a simple course right here on the Alife Virtual School campus.

  1. Start: Make sure you are at the main welcome area of the Alife Virtual School.
  2. Set Course: Open your World Map (Ctrl+M). Look for a landmark or labeled area on the map called the "Observatory Hill." Right-click on it and select Autopilot.
  3. Explore While Moving: As your avatar begins walking, use the Alt + mouse combination to look around. Admire the architecture of the school buildings and the creations of other students.
  4. Take a Detour: On your way, you will pass a garden with a large crystal sculpture. When you are near it, press Esc to cancel Autopilot. Use Double-Click to Walk to navigate around the garden and get a closer look at the sculpture.
  5. Resume Your Journey: Once you are finished exploring the garden, open your World Map again. Your destination beacon for Observatory Hill should still be there. Right-click it and select Autopilot again to resume your trip.
  6. Success: Your exercise is complete when your avatar reaches the base of the Observatory! Congratulations, you've successfully combined all the techniques from this class.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Why does my avatar sometimes try to walk straight through a wall with Autopilot?
This happens when the sim you are on does not have pathfinding data "baked" for that area. Without this data, Autopilot defaults to a "beeline" route, walking in a straight line towards the destination, regardless of obstacles. On well-made sims, this is less of an issue.
Q2: Can I use Autopilot to travel to a different sim or region?
No. Autopilot and pathfinding only function within the boundaries of a single sim (a 256x256m or, in the case of Alife Virtual's free islands, a 65,536 sqm area). To cross into an adjacent sim, you must either walk/fly across the border manually or use a teleport.
Q3: Can I make my avatar run instead of walk during Autopilot?
Autopilot itself doesn't have a "run" setting. However, your avatar's movement is determined by the animations you are using. If you use an "Animation Overrider" (AO) that replaces your standard walk animation with a run animation, your avatar will run during Autopilot. AOs are a more advanced topic covered in other Alife Virtual School classes.
Q4: Do these navigation features cost anything or use up special resources?
Absolutely not! These are all core, built-in features of the Firestorm viewer and the Alife Virtual world. They are completely free to use, just like our classes are free to attend. In fact, our commitment to a free experience is why we also offer free mesh, texture, and animation uploads—unlike Second Life, which charges for every upload.
